MERCHANTS OF DOUBT exposes the well-funded methods used by – to quote the blurb – a secretive group of highly charismatic, silver- tongued pundits-for-hire, who are paid to make us think things like climate change, or the links between toxic chemicals and human illness, are just too ambiguous to warrant any sort of corrective action (such as regulation). They present themselves in the media as scientific authorities – yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum confusion. The documentary, which has won many awards, was based on the book by the historians of science Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway.
